Père Lachaise Cemetery
The world's most famous and most visited cemetery, the Père Lachaise Cemetery, is located in the 20th arrondissement of Paris.
Around 300,000 people are buried including many famous artists, notables and writers. Named after the Jesuit Father Lachaise, King Louis XIV's confessor, the cemetery covers more than 109 acres and has become an open-air museum and Pantheon garden. You will be astonished at the sight of amazing statues, sepulchres and tombstone.
For the ones who’d like to see some specific graves (from Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, Honoré de Balzac), it is highly recommended to buy a map of the cemetery at one of the entrance of the cemetery.
Parc de Belleville
Situated between the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont and the Père Lachaise Cemetery, the Parc de Belleville is the highest park in Paris.
The area had been famous for its taverns since the 14th century. The park has still a small vineyard growing pinot meunier from Champagne and chardonnay from Bourgogne. This vineyard is a reminder of the viticultural history of the district. The park hosts the Maison de l’Air, the House of Air, which offers information and exhibits concerning the air and atmosphere of Paris.
On top of the hill you can enjoy a really nice panoramic view of the city. The garden proposes playground for children, ping-pong tables and an open-air theatre.
Belleville
Belleville, which means Beautiful town, is the birthplace of the famous French singer Edit Piaf. Annexed by Paris in 1860, the town used to be a working class neighbourhood.
During the "Paris Commune", when the Versailles Army came to reconquer the city, it faced the toughest resistance in Belleville and in neighbouring town Ménilmontant. The residents of Belleville used to be considered the most rebellious and fiery people.
Due to the cheap rents, lots of artists and immigrants have flown into this area. An important Chinese community has been established there which makes Belleville a multi-ethnic neighbourhood.
Every Tuesday and Friday along the Boulevard de Belleville takes place an outdoor market.
